After the fifth season concluded, TOEI TV wanted to cut costs regarding the Shaman King TV series, considering the dramatic drop in viewership numbers from 11 millions to about 6 millions (overall week rank 13 dropped to 41). ANIMETION JP argued that they needed the money in order to produce episodes of the high quality they did so far (which, according to them, made it possible in the first place that the series was able to gather a strong audience of 11 million people). TOEI TV then suggested that ANIMETION JP could only produce a shortened season without a mid-season split, consisting of 12 or 13 episodes airing from January through May to keep the quality consistent, but ANIMETION JP declined as they also had to focus on other projects.

In December 2006, after two months of negotiating didn't result in some kind of satisfying contract, TOEI TV surprisingly cancelled Shaman King for the '07 TV Season. This resulted in ANIMETION JP terminating the contract and looking for a new TV Station and sponsor in order to bring their series to some sort of closure in a possible sixth season.

Finally a small TV Station, AF (Anime Fantastica) showed interest in the show and wanted to pick it up for a sixth season, but it turned out that it wasn't able to pay the high budget AJ (Animetion JP) was looking for. They tried to convince them to do a shortened season of 10 episodes, which they could have financed, but AJ declined, resulting in the show going on hiatus.

In November 2007, TOEI TV offered AJ a new contract on a sixth season, consisting of two parts featuring 8 episodes each, however still with a small budget cut. AJ accepted the contract but asked for more freedom about the season's split, wanting to decide for themselves how many episodes each part would contain. TOEI TV accepted this demand without hesitating and eventually Shaman King got renewed for a sixth season on December 27, 2007.

Production for the sixth season began in early January and the sixth season premiered in late March 2008.

After the sixth season, negotiations between TOEI TV and AJ began again. The viewership numbers were low, even lower than expected, but the series was near to a satisfying closure. The question was what both the TV station and the production studio would expect from a possible seventh season. It was clear that the seventh season could not possibly be as popular as the third or fourth season.

In June, TOEI TV offered a contract on a season split into two parts, 10 episodes each, with significant budget cuts, which AJ declined, as they needed the money to keep the quality consistent (AJ was famous for their fluent animations). In July, a new version of the contract was offered, with lower budget costs, though the two parts of season 7 would have to air over a span of two years. AJ signed the contract as they would have the possibility to focus on other projects during the long hiatus, and production began in early August 2009.

Season seven premiered on September 10, 2009, with weak viewership numbers to mixed recepetion.

After the seventh season, Shaman King got cancelled. At least, the Manga series storyline was fully covered and the series got a satisfying ending, though AJ expressed their interest in continuing the series with an own storyline and fillers.

In December, 2012, AJ expressed their interest in adapting the Shaman King Manga Sequel Flowers for TOEI TV, and rumors were spread that AJ would soon begin producing a Flowers Anime. However, TOEI TV denied these rumours to be true .

In it's seven-season lasting nine-year run, TOEI TV paid about 3.6 million Dollars for the production of Shaman King. They earned about 3.8 million Dollars with the airing of the show and DVD sales. All in all they made 0.2 million Dollars profit due to the show.

Shaman King FlowersBearbeiten

On February 21, 2014, an Anime Adaption of Shaman King Flowers was announced. AJ is going to produce the episodes for TOEI TV, and the first part of the first season, consisting of 10 episodes, will begin airing at some point in 2014. On February 27, 2014, it was announced that part one of the first season would premiere on May 25, 2014.

The initial airing of the first season was met with critical praise regarding the animation style. The viewership numbers were good during the first season's run. On September 2, 2014, TOEI TV announced that the second part of the first season would start production in early November. The CEO of AJ stated via twitter that he expects the second part, consisting of 7 episodes, to start airing in December 2014 or January 2015. In late September the premiere date for the first episode of the second part was revealed to be the 12th January 2015.

After the first Season concluded, TOEI TV renewed the series for a second season, thanks to increasing ratings.
