The first season was ordered on February 15, 2011. After the network president viewed the pilot episode entitled "Spring of the Dead", he ordered a shortened season consisting of 10 episodes (the main producers later stated that a shortened season, consisting of only 10 episodes made it possible for them to work on every episode on their own and keep the quality consistent). The first season premiered on November 15, 2011 and immediatly broke previous viewer records, even though it was critically panned by reviewers.

On December 16, 2011, a second season was announced, featuring 12 episodes and running from september through december 2012 on a weekly basis. It received underwhelming Reception, with some of the critics calling it "one of the worst primetime Animes of the Decade".

On September November 6, 2012, a third season and a fourth season was announced even before the third episode of the second season aired. Due to the great success of the series (season 2 premiered with 4.74 million viewers on JPPT, a pay TV station, breaking the records of 4.19 million viewers it set 2011. The season premiere of season 1 broke the previous record of the anime series Soul Eater, which drew 3.50 million viewers with it's fourth season finale), the series was renewed this early in it's current season.

Season 3 and 4 will both feature about 10 episodes and run 2013 and 2014, with the episodes being aired from September through November, respectively. The third season premiered with exceptional ratings, which dropped throughout the season. Episode 30 met the lowest ratings yet; those increased in the following episodes nontheless and the finale was the most-viewed finale of all three seasons. The third season was universally panned by critics, as were the previous seasons.

Shoji Sato departed from the series in early 2014, and was eventually replaced by Takeshi Obata. The fourth season premiered as planned and garnered immensely high viewership numbers with it's first episode. The steadily dropped throughout the season, before increasing towards the end again. The fourth season was received with largely negative reception, though it was slightly better than the reception of it's predecessors. In April 2014, it was confirmed that the fourth season would not be based on the Manga Series anymore, but instead focus on an original story. This would allow the producers to continue the story.

On September 9, 2014, a fifth and a sixth season were announced. The sixth season was originally set to be the final season, however after the fourth season concluded, the producers stated that the series will not end after the sixth season. The fifth season is currently set to feature 10 episodes. Takeshi Obata will continue his involvement. The fifth season was the first season to receive mixed reviews, after the first four season received underwhelming reception.

The sixth season was originally set to be the final season, but it was since announced that the series will continue after the sixth season. The sixth season was received generally positive by critics.

A seventh season will air at some point in 2017. It is going to contain 14 episodes and air in two blocks. Takeshi Obata departed from the series after the sixth season due to his involvement with other projects, and Takashi Okazaki became the new director. This season introduces a big number of new main characters and is the first season to take place in a single location, the hospital. The season was critically acclaimed. It  is also the only season of HotD that managed to increase it's viewership numbers with the second episode. The third episode of the season was especially well received by critics, with a lot of reviewers complimenting the quiety of the episode.

The series was renewed for an eighth and final season in September 2017. Takashi Okazaki will continue his involvement. It was well received by critics, even though it received slightly less positive reception than the seventh season. Shoji Sato worked on the one-hour series finale art alongside Takashi Okazaki.
